The Alodine Product Family:
The name, “Alodine” is a registered trade name of Henkel Surface Technologies. This family of compounds is formulated to provide a conversion coating on aluminum that will meet a military specification, MIL-DTL-5541F, which describes “Chemical Conversion Coatings on Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys,” and MIL-DTL-81706 that describes the processes certified for use. These products are certified and listed in the “Qualified Products List,” QPL-81706-15.
Alodine 1200, 1201, & 1200S:
Alodine 1200 is Henkel’s product family for hexavalent chromium conversion. Contained in this family are two primary products; Alodine 1201 and Alodine 1200S. Alodine 1201 is a ready-to-use liquid product which, when brushed-on or diluted and immersion-applied, produces a gold-colored Chromate Conversion Coating which contains hexavalent chromium. Consistent with Class 1A of the mil spec, it is formulated to provide maximum corrosion prevention when left unpainted as well as to improve adhesion of paint finish systems on aluminum and aluminum alloys. Alodine 1200S is the powdered composition dissolved by professional industrial facilities into their immersion baths.
Alodine 600 & 600 RTU:
Alodine 600 is essentially a modified version of the 1200 family, being also a hexavalent chromium formulation but producing a lighter weight film. It is ideally suited for enhanced electrical contact and minimized electrical resistance rather than maximizing corrosion resistance. Like Alodine 1200, it too produces a gold-colored finish on aluminum alloys. The “600RTU” version is ready to use requiring no dilution.
Alodine #22 Toner:
Alodine #22 Toner is used in conjunction with Alodine 600 to achieve the corrosion resistant requirements of Class 1A of MIL-DTL-5541. It is not required to meet Class 3.
Alodine 1001:
Alodine 1001 is a liquid product which, when brushed on or immersion-applied, produces a clear-colored Chromate Conversion Coating which contains hexavalent chromium. It is only certified to meet the requirements of Class 3 of the mil spec and is intended for use as a corrosion preventive film for electrical and electronic applications where lower contact resistance is required.
Alodine 1132, Touch-N-Prep:
Alodine 1132 is a no rinse chromate conversion coating chemical in a magic marker-type applicator for use on aluminum, steel, and galvanized surfaces for multiple industrial maintenance and treatment applications.
Touch-N-Prep Alodine 1132 effectively phosphates most metals including aluminum, ferrous and galvanized substrates. It doesn’t require rinsing, and can be air-dried or force-dried with something as simple as a hair dryer or an infra-red lamp. Alodine 1132 will produce the traditional brown/gold coating color on aluminum alloys.
Alodine 5200 & 5700 (Chromate-Free):
Alodine 5200 produces a clear, chromate-free conversion coating. Alodine 5200 is considered environmentally friendly and thus exhibits lower toxicity than the chromate versions. The Department of Defense approves Alodine 5200 for use as a coating substrate only to improve adhesion of paint. It does not provide the corrosion resistance of that of Alodine 1201 and is not listed in MIL-DTL-5541F or QPL-81706-15. The Alodine 5700 version of this formulation is packaged as a ready-to-use product requiring no dilution and is intended for dip immersion application.
Alodine T 5900RTU (Trivalent Chromium):
Alodine T 5900RTU is a trivalent chromium formulation that produces an iridescent blue to gold chromate conversion coating on aluminum alloys. Neither the product compound nor the resulting coating contains hexavalent chromium. It does not provide the corrosion resistance as that of Alodine 1201 and is not listed in MIL-DTL-5541F or QPL-81706-15. It is generally recommended as an excellent base for organic finishes and adhesives. The designation “RTU” signifies “Ready-To-Use” in that as packaged, it requires no dilution.
