The Care & Feeding Of A Quality Varnish Brush
|
|
- A high quality China boar bristle brush must be broken in before serious use. New brushes are very dirty. Expect to take some time to break in a new brush. Use it and clean it out several times with mineral spirits. Keep in mind it may take many sessions to really get it clean. This is why, if you are a serious varnisher, you invest in top quality brushes and store them correctly.
- The best way to store a good brush is to keep its bristles wet, suspended in diesel fuel or kerosene. Based on years of experience, nothing works better than diesel fuel for this purpose. Diesel is oily enough to keep the bristles soft while still having enough cutting capability to keep the brush clean. It is not unusual for brushes stored in this manner to last a lifetime.
- You will need a container that can be sealed, is impervious to solvent attack and has provision for hanging the brushes vertically inside with their bristles submerged.
- Prior to varnishing, clean the diesel from the brush with mineral spirits, rinsing and spinning several times. Once done repeat the process. It is recommended that the diesel reservoir be changed out once or twice a year.
