Detailed Product Description:
Methyl Propyl Ketone is a colorless liquid ketone with an odor resembling
that of acetone. A low-density, non-HAP (“non-Hazardous Air Pollutant)”
solvent for coatings and industrial cleaning and surface preparation applications,
MPK is designed to offer low solvency, low density, and medium evaporation rate
for use in low-VOC formulations.
Grade/Purity:
This product is manufactured by Eastman in Reagent Grade with greater than
90% purity.
Background:
Eastman MPK is a low-VOC, non-HAP substitute for the industrial cleaner and
solvent MEK (methyl ethyl ketone).
Applications:
This solvent can be used in metal degreasing and ink remover applications
and industrial cleaning fluids, as well as in paint and coatings formulations,
printing inks, vinyl-coated fabrics, and as a thinning agent for lacquers.
MPK is a medium evaporating, urethane-grade solvent. It is an active solvent
for most synthetic resins including acrylics, polyesters, cellulosics, epoxies,
vinyls, and alkyds. Its high solvency, low density, and medium evaporation
rate make it attractive as a letdown solvent for high-solids air-dry resins used
in low VOC alkyd and polyester/urethane coatings.
Substitution for Aerospace Cleaning Applications:
From cleaning to pre-treatment, MPK is an effective non-HAP solvent
alternative to MEK and Toluene. MPK satisfies the rigorous aerospace
performance requirements. It is environmentally friendly, evaporating more
slowly than alternative solvents, with no significant contribution to ground-level
ozone.
In a variety of cleaning applications (i.e. metal degreasing, ink remover, industrial
cleaning fluids), MPK has directly replaced MEK for those end-users seeking to
achieve a balance between performance and environmental compliance; because
of its strong solvency power, readily biodegradable status and higher flash point
versus that of MEK.
MPK can replace MEK in hand wipes used for the surface preparation of military
and commercial aircraft. MPK effectively removes soils, hydraulic oils, sealants
and other contaminants from aircraft surfaces, ensuring proper bonding of industrial
coatings. It can also be used to clean industrial paint guns. A non-HAP solvent,
MPK helps aerospace manufacturers meet stringent NESHAP regulations without
sacrificing performance.
MPK is a cost-effective cleaner because it evaporates more slowly than MEK.
With MPK, more of the solvent stays in wipes during cleaning.
For Coatings Formulations:
Compatible in most coatings formulations, MPK dissolves readily with an
array of resins, including acrylics, polyesters, epoxies, vinyls and alkyds. Its
high solvency, low density and medium evaporation rate make it a particularly
good choice for high-solids resins and coatings formulations requiring a low
VOC content. MPK can also be used in printing inks and vinyl coated fabrics,
and as a thinning agent for lacquers.
Reduces VOC Emissions:
To further reduce VOCs and achieve faster evaporation, MPK can be blended
with methyl acetate, a non-VOC, active solvent. The blend creates faster
dry-to-touch for increased product turnaround. With its low MIR
(maximum incremental reactivity) value, the blend can also help formulators
of aerosol coatings meet California’s MIR guidelines.
Precautions:
Highly Flammable, dangerous fire risk, explosive limits in air range from 2 to 13%.
Moderately toxic by ingestion and inhalation with a TLV = 750 ppm
