Urea, 200grams, ACS Reagent Grade
Price:
$26.95
Chemical Name:
Urea
CAS Number:
57-13-6
Chemical Formula:
CO(NH2)2
Synonyms:
Carbamide, Carbonyldiamide

Detailed Product Description:

A white powder, almost odorless, with slight saline taste.  Highly

soluble in water, alcohol, and benzene.  Urea is also known as

Carbamide, carbamide resin, isourea, carbonyl diamide, and

carbonyldiamine.

Grade/Purity:

This is ACS Reagent grade, with a minimum purity of 99.0%.

Laboratory Use:

Urea is a powerful protein denaturant.  This property can be exploited

to increase the solubility of some proteins.  For this application, it is

used in concentrations up to 10 molar.  Urea is used to effectively

disrupt the non-covalent bonds in proteins.

Industrial/Commercial Applications:

A component of fertilizer and animal feed, providing a relatively

cheap source of nitrogen to promote growth.  A raw material for the

manufacture of plastics such as urea/formaldehyde resins.

A raw material for the manufacture of various glues such as urea-

formaldehyde which is waterproof and is used for marine plywood.

A reactant in ready-to-use cold compresses for first-aid use, due to the

endothermic reaction it creates when mixed with water.

A flame-proofing agent (commonly used in dry chemical fire extinguishers

as Urea-potassium bicarbonate).

An ingredient in many tooth-whitening products.

Production:

Urea is commercially produced from two raw materials, ammonia and

carbon dioxide.  Large quantities of carbon dioxide are produced during

the manufacture of ammonia from coal or from hydrocarbons such as

natural gas and petroleum-derived raw materials.  This allows for the

direct synthesis of urea from these raw materials.

Precautions:

Urea can be irritating to skin and eyes.  Repeated or prolonged contact

with urea in fertilizer form on the skin may cause dermatitis.  The substance

also irritates the eyes, the skin, and the respiratory tract.  The substance

decomposes on heating above melting point, producing toxic gases, and

reacts violently with strong oxidants, nitrites, inorganic chlorides, chlorites

and perchlorates, causing fire and explosion hazard.
