Detailed Product Description:
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), also known as Butylhydroxytoluene, is
an organic compound generally used as an antioxidant in petroleum products
or as a preservative in foods.
It is a white crystalline, combustible powder, soluble in methanol, ethanol,
isopropanol, benzene, naphtha, methyl ethyl ketone, gasolines, and kerosenes.
Grade/Purity:
This is the highest purity version of this product, FCC (Food Codex Certified)
Grade suitable for use in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, with a minimum
purity of 99%.
Applicable Specifications:
BHT satisfies ASTM D910-07A for use as a preservative in aviation gasolines.
Chemistry:
BHT is produced by an alkylation reaction of p-cresol with isobutylene. The
compound behaves as a synthetic analog of vitamin E, primarily acting as a
terminating agent that suppresses autoxidation, (a process whereby organic
compounds are attacked by atmospheric oxygen). BHT stops this autocatalytic
reaction by converting peroxy radicals to hydroperoxides.
In the chemical industry it is added to tetrahydrofuran and diethyl ether to inhibit
the formation of dangerous organic peroxides.
This fat-soluble phenol is primarily used as an antioxidant food additive as well
as in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products and in
embalming fluids.
Use in foods
First patented in 1947, BHT received approval of the Food and Drug Administration
for use as a food additive and preservative in 1954. BHT reacts with free radicals,
slowing the rate of autoxidation in food, preventing changes in the food's color,
odor, and taste. BHT is found in cereal, chewing gum, and foods high in fats such
as potato chips and shortening.
Typical Applications for Fuel Treatment:
For the preservation of gasolines over long periods of time, a typical blend ratio
might be one to two teaspoons to 20 gallons of fuel.
Precautions:
Toxic by inhalation and ingestion. This is a skin and eye irritant. Download, read,
and understand the associated precautions to be exercised prior to using this substance.
